I totally forgot to relate this tale from my time in the hair salon yesterday.

As the one receptionist was trying to figure out whether she should reschedule me, or have someone else cut my hair, another woman came up to the other receptionist to pay for her cut. It was a $112 cut (and colour, possibly). She gave the stylist a $5 tip. $5! That's fucking ridiculous! My cut is $50, and I give a $10 tip.

She's probably a regular. And that's probably why her new haircut looked like ass. Seriously. She was at least 40 (and trying to look 18), and she just looked incredibly stupid. And it didn't suit her hair type. She had really thin hair, and it was all chunked together and spiked up, so pretty much all you noticed was her scalp. Suckahead!

So there was at least one benefit of not checking my messages at home (where the salon had left a message asking me to reschedule), and showing up at the salon anyway.

Making fun of stupid rich people can be fun. Because I am evil.

do you get your hair cut in the neighbourhood? i don't know where to go because they're mostly pretty pricey near work... i have tried evora and didn't like the woman i cut my hair with.

also, i like making fun of rich people, too. it's so easy to do in forest hill and the yonge/st. clair area because they are everywhere!

I go to the Fiorio on Yonge, just north of St. Clair. I've only been one other time before, but I liked how my hair turned out, so I've decided to keep going back. I can't comment on any other stylists, but Nelson is good, friendly, and fairly decently priced (with tax and everything it came to $53.12 or something like that).

It's a little too easy to make fun of the rich people in this area, but I do it anyway.

I HATE tipping hairdressers. HATE it. I leave as little as my conscience will let me. Because I feel they already overcharge women. And they already overcharge period. Seriously, $50 for a haircut - give me a break! It's not rocket science!!!

So, had you been standing behind me in line, watching me pay, you would have thunk me a bitch too.

Maybe I am! ;)

I guess I was more astounded at the fact that since the woman I saw could afford a $112 haircut, she could totally afford more than $5 for a tip. And yeah, $50 for a haircut is a bit much, but I don't think it's my stylist who set his price there, but the dude who owns the place. And since I'm totally inept at doing my hair, I'm willing to pay for a good cut. :)

It's just possible she felt the same about her cut as you did, hence the shitty tip. But no, you're probably right -- some people have a tip limit where they thing a $5 bill is a great tip no matter what percentage of their total bill it represents. I don't know how it works at hair places, but at restaurants that just means the server has to pay into the tip pool out of their own pocket, usually, so that sucks.

That's true, maybe she didn't really like it. She looked fairly content, but who knows. :)
